The Fandex Family publishing series continues with this bird field guide, with bright colors and realistic, die-cut profiles identifying 47 wild birds in North America.

FROM THE CRITICS

Boston Herald

Instant fun... you'll always have an answer when the kids wail: "I don't have anything to do...

Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen

Fifty die-cut cards held together at the bottom depict the nation's most common bird species. The major bird families are represented, in the order in which they usually appear in more complete field guides. Each card is topped with a photo of the bird in question, which also helps the reader appreciate the expected silhouette and details such as bill shape. What is lost, however, is scale as each bird is presented at the same size. The card includes a range map, field notes and a narrative paragraph highlighting important features. Species from throughout the country are depicted, so there is no need to purchase a different guide for different regions. This might be a fun way to teach kids the names of common birds as it can be easily adapted into a flashcard game and the tactile nature of the product will make it appealing to young naturalists.
