FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
Another entry in the "Nature Company Discoveries Library," this book reviews the components of our solar system and touches on other celestial phenomena such as black holes, nebulae and quasars. As with all volumes in this series, bold illustrations fill each page with lots of fun facts crammed in sidebars and captions. Kids will learn how hot the sun is (27 million degrees F) and how long Neil Armstrong's footprint will remain on the moon (millions of years). A list of upcoming lunar and solar eclipses (through 2001) appears at the back, as does a glossary. Among the many titles in the series are Great Buildings, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece.
Children's Literature - Kristin R. Harris
Stars and Planets provides an in-depth investigation of astronomy that begins with a brief history of man's interest in the heavens. Illustrated with period art, the progression of ideas about the relationship of the earth to the sun and other planets is highlighted with details about the lives of such important early astronomers as Copernicus, Ptolemy and Brahe. Starting with our solar system, large detailed illustrations accompany information about the sun and its planets in the section entitled "Our Neighborhood." Numerous sidebars present a wide range of related information, such as scientists' theories and biographies. More information is presented in "The Universe" section, which explores the life cycle of stars and galaxies and discusses observatories and telescopes. This beautiful book would be a great addition to any child's library. A glossary, facts and figures, and index make it a valuable reference.
