FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Sally J. K. Davies
Digger is the title but this book covers many different types of construction equipment not just the diggers. Excavators, giant jaws, bulldozers for sand, bulldozers for snow, dump trucks, backhoes, log loader, excavator, cement mixer, paving equipment, cherry pickers, cranes, mechanical moles, and old-fashioned construction machines are all featured. Each double page spread highlights a different machine with lots of great color photographs and boxed text chunks give interesting nuggets of information. As with most of Dorling Kindersley Books, the page design is heavy on images and consequently the text is short, concise and easy to read. Sometimes the text playfully dances across the page. In the picture of the mechanical mole, the words whirr . . . whirr . . . whirr . . . whirr . . . whirr," float above the huge tunnel-boring machine. This book includes a glossary, index, and picture gallery to identify different types of machines. "The Machines at Work" series from Dorling Kindersley also includes Airplane, Fire Truck, and Tractor. 2003, Dorling Kindersley, Ages 2 to 8.
