Wolves (First Reports)
- Book Review,
by Mary K. Dornhoffer

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4 - Both of these books cover the basics, such as where the animals live, what they eat, and how they raise their young. Each one also includes conservation efforts, a range map, and a page of random facts. Clear, eye-catching photos (some full-page) nicely complement the text and add visual appeal. The language is somewhat sophisticated and is best suited to kids who read easily on their own. Neither book goes into great detail, but, of the two, Cheetahs is the more successful, perhaps because of its narrower focus (there's only one species of cheetah). Wolvesseems a bit more scattered. Most of the book is devoted to the gray wolf, and the red wolf and Ethiopian wolf are discussed only briefly. At times, this can be confusing. For example, in the chapter that discusses where wolves live, the red wolf is described as having been pushed to the south by the gray wolf, but no details are given about its range. Wolves (First Reports)

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Trina Heidt

Although much more is understood about wolves today, the education needs to continue. In this book from the "First Reports" series, readers will discover that while wolves and dogs are related and do have similarities, they need to be treated very differently. Wolves belong in the wild where they hunt and are a necessary part of the food chain. Readers will also learn about the tragic history of the wolf, how this beautiful and much misunderstood creature was almost hunted to extinction, and how the wolf population is being revitalized. Stunning close-up photos provide a closer look at the characteristics wolves. Also included in this book are a glossary, index, table of contents and "Did You Know," "At a Glance," and "Want to Know More" sections. This is a highly recommended resource for any library or science class. 2004, Compass Point Books, Ages 6 to 10.
