Sweden and the Third Way: A Macroeconomic Evaluation - Book Reviews,
by Philip Whyman
Sweden and the Third Way: A Macroeconomic Evaluation SYNOPSIS Whyman (U. of Central Lancashire, UK) offers a critical evaluation of the so-called "third way" version of the "new" social democracy, using for its basis a case study of the experience of Sweden. To this end, Whyman first develops the theoretical features of a "third way" model. He outlines the Swedish model, developed by several prominent Swedish labor movement economists, contrasting it with contemporary economic policies. He then analyses internal and external challenges to Swedish macroeconomic policy and evaluates successive governments' economic programs. Finally, he examines the plausibility of revising the core elements of the Swedish model as an alternative to the prevailing economic mode. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
