Indonesia's Role in the Resolution of the Cambodian Problem

FROM THE PUBLISHER

This investigation into the Cambodian question provides an in-depth study and critical analysis of Indonesia's diplomatic involvement in the Cambodian peace process. It traces the Cambodian problem to Vietnam's military intervention and the consequent installation of the People's Republic of Kampuchea in 1979, as well as examining ASEAN's perception of a security threat and recognition of Indonesia's potential to play the 'interlocutor' thanks to its rapport with the Khmer factions. It also explores the international community's growing interest in solving the problem coupled with the Paris International Conference on Cambodia and Indonesia's perseverance in the resolution which resulted in Indonesia winning the title of an 'honest peace broker'. The text will prove invaluable for readers of international relations, politics and conflict studies, and would also benefit those following Southeast Asian studies.

SYNOPSIS

In a revision of his Ph.D. dissertation on Indonesian studies for his current institution, Prasad (Sri Venkatasware U., India) explores the role Indonesia played in the peace process between rival royal and communist forces in Cambodia, or Kampuchea, during the 1970s and 1980s, leading to the Paris International Conference on Cambodia 1989- 91. He places that effort within the context of Indonesia's overall foreign policy in southeast Asia.

FROM THE CRITICS

Y. Yagara Reddy

This book, though primarily designed to cater to the wider needs of the researchers/students of Indochina studies and the related fields, gives a compact study of the given subject area and reviews various aspects of the substantial contribution of Indonesia to the resolution of the Cambodian imbroglio in the course of the various vicissitudes of political life Jakarta faced and, therefore, carries the claim of a standard source for those who aim at an in depth study of this landmark in the exploration of the problems of the kind. Anyone can trace a distinct pattern in the author's cogent and thought-provoking presentation of the painstaking research.
