Game of Mirrors: Centre-Periphery National Conflicts - Book Reviews,
by Francisco Letamendia, Karen Hatherley (Translator)
Game of Mirrors: Centre-Periphery National Conflicts FROM THE CRITICS Booknews Utilizing the radical nationalism of the Basque radicals as a departure point, Letamendia (political science, U. of the Basque Country, Spain) explores the relationship of violence to the nationalism of third world liberation movements and the nationalism of imperialism. Although the two types of opposing nationalism must be analyzed differently, argues Letamendia, the violence they engender frequently can be seen as mirror images of each other. After highlighting the reflected nature of peripheral nationalisms that mimetise the construction of national society and community by the center, he studies the mimetic nature of center's violence of the state. He also discusses transformations in the center-periphery conflict brought about by the decentralization of the welfare state and the emergence of supra-state realities such as the European Union.
