Explaining Environmentalism: In Search of a New Social Movement FROM THE CRITICS Booknews Throughout this study, Sutton characterizes the basic distinction between reformist and radical approaches to nature as that between "environmentalism" (viewing nature anthropocentrically) and "radical ecology" (viewing nature biocentrically). Part of Sutton's argument is that the two approaches are distinct enough to justify their separation, not only in their world views, but in the histories of each movement. Throughout his book, Sutton pays attention to environmentalists mostly unknown outside the USKarl Werner Brand, Klaus Eder, and Ulrich Beckmaking the book a window onto the philosophical terrain of environmentalism in Europe.
