From Dictatorship to Democracy: Economic Policy in Malawi, 1964-2000 - Book Reviews,
by Jane Harrigan
From Dictatorship to Democracy: Economic Policy in Malawi, 1964-2000 FROM THE CRITICS Booknews Noting that the land-locked southeastern African country is essentially as impoverished at the turn of the century as it was at independence in 1964, Harrigan (economic studies, U. of Manchester) analyzes the development strategies in Malawi that failed during those three and half decades. She emphasizes economic policies and reform, and the political economy context in which they have been implemented. She argues that before multi-party democracy was introduced in 1994, the political economy context did not conform to the orthodox neo-classical, rent-seeking paradigm that dominated much of development theory during the 1980s.
