Hong Kong from Britain to China: Political Cleavages, Electoral Dynamics, and Institutional Changes

SYNOPSIS

Pang-Kwong, a scholar of politics at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, examines the political context in which the political reforms of the 1980s took place and charts the development of center-periphery cleavage in the 1980s. He examines changing political forces within Hong Kong and their alignments since the 1970s, as well as mobilization efforts the relevant electoral participants made in the 1991, 1995, and 1998 LegCo popular elections. He also explores the designs of and relationship between the executive and the legislature in the post-1997 Hong Kong and concludes with discussion of scenarios that may occur in the future political and electoral markets.
