This anthology features 40 annotated excerpts of first-hand accounts of many aspects of this new West-East contact, many translated into English for the first time, mostly by Portuguese travelers, merchants, missionaries, soldiers, and government officials plus some later chroniclers and historians. Among the illustrations are the Ming emperor and empress, a polychrome dish (in color), churchmen, a Cantonese war junk, Chinese dress, and a church and temple in Macau.
