Yet it's hard to get past the novel's many graceless shortcomings clichd language (time passes "at a snail's pace," old habits "die hard"), cartoonish scenes and a protagonist whose superhero character desperately needs fleshing out. As is often the case with abridgments, this one is sometimes difficult to follow; loose ends abound, and character development is poor. Secret Service Agent Scot Harvath undertakes a one-man search-and-rescue mission to recover the U.S. President kidnapped by renegade Swiss spy Gerhard Miner. Armand Schultz skillfully narrates the tightly wound thriller with perfect timing, good foreign accents, and easily identifiable characterizations. Schultz's tense, energetic reading builds the suspense and drama of Thor's strong plot of political intrigue and international terrorism. Fans of Ludlum-style action will be satisfied.
