FROM THE CRITICS

KLIATT - Ann Hart

Another installment in the Justice League of America series, this book will only be a priority for those wishing to keep their superhero fans completely satisfied. The story begins with Henry and Ana Lindstadt on a honeymoon diving trip in the Bermuda Triangle finding a thermocline, which is the passage to another dimension. In this dimension the Greek God of War, Ares, has an island full of immortal puppet warriors just waiting for the correct time to annihilate Themyscira, Wonder Woman's island home, and to release the great underground evil they guard and wreak havoc on the world of humans. Henry enters the dimension and comes under the power of Ares and his pulsating orb that magically dominates the players in this drama of impending evil, and the forces are in place to carry out the prophesied scheme. The Justice League of America is notified of suspicious happenings in the area and Wonder Woman responds because her homeland is close to the danger. Soon all the superheroes are involved and the battle commences in earnest. With much volcanic activity, plain magic and superhero strength Ares' orb is soon exposed for its real power. When things settle down at the end Henry and Ana become caretakers of the now humanized horde of would-be warriors who need to learn how to survive as beings in our dimension. The reader is filled in on some of the history and lore of the superheroes in the course of the story. Profanity is kept to a minimum with the word "hell" referring to an actual place once in five uses. Characterizations are shallow and the plot minimal. This is a first novel for Lay, who has been a comic strip author for over 25 years. (Wonder Woman; Justice League of America).
