Butcher, the Baker and the Upstairs Maid

SYNOPSIS

Victoria Ashley comes home when her mother dies. She takes a job helping a crippled invalid, Agnes, and the two of them play games to stay occupied. Vicky thinks the games childish, but goes along with them. Each month, Vicky notices, a certain boat came into the harbor and Agnes gets very excited. Vicky begins watching for the boat, too. Each time, when it arrives, there are some suspicious-looking garbage bags tossed into the bay. Vicky contacts a friend, and soon another pair of eyes is watching for the boat. Soon there are four bags dropped over the side of the boat -- but only three float up to the surface. Soon, there's a terrible storm. Agnes has an accident. And the Captain of the boat comes ashore.

About The Author:
One year we went for a vacation, along the coast. In one small town, I noticed the fishing boats neatly tied up and the nets spread out to be dried and repaired. Out at sea, there sat a huge bank of fog. It made the whole area dark and dreary. I thought it a great setting for a mystery.
