School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-These colorful, attractive books highlight contemporary challenges and lifestyles, with an emphasis on economics and the environment. Each one includes a map and key facts; information on landscape, climate, natural resources, pollution, diet, leisure, immigration, business and manufacturing, and other issues; and many "In Their Own Words" interviews with citizens of varying ages and ethnic backgrounds. The books have little to nothing on history, the arts, communication, religion, and holidays. While both titles contain interesting facts, there are also superficialities and omissions. France, for instance, doesn't mention the Massif Central (a key geographical feature), imports, or the fashion industry. Richard Ingham's France and Greg Nickles and Niki Walker's Canada (both RSVP, 2000) cover all the material in these titles but in much greater detail, and include historical and cultural data as well.-Ann W.
