FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
The story begins with a young Spanish boy and his grandfather discussing the greatest baseball players. With each new chapter of the book, the conversation continues and the grandson always wants to know if his grandfather thinks that the player being read about was the best and his grandfather always answers with a story of how and why this player became a legend. Every player seems to be "the best," and for good reason. Pictures add much to the interest and the stories about each man are certainly inspiring. At the bottom of each page, the reader will find a pronunciation key for the players' names and a mini glossary for words that explain many baseball terms and words dealing with baseball in general. The author includes an epilogue that is a list of some of the best Latino baseball players in major league baseball history and a full glossary with the words from the bottom of each page. Young baseball fans will love reading this book. Each chapter provides the story of courage that the player had to use in order to become successful against the odds. The topic is well covered, well illustrated, and can be read at one sitting. It is truly amazing the amount of information covered in just 44 pages. This would be excellent in classrooms as a high interest low level reading for middle school age students and excellent for the early reader. Even though girls may read this, it is a definite boys' book and instills the idea that nothing is impossible no matter what your background. 2004, Red Brick Learning, Ages 8 to 12.
