Snowboarding

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - John D. Orsborn

Too often nonfiction books on the extreme sports are written for ages 10 and 12 to adult. For early readers this limits their exposure to contemporary topics. This title in the "To the Extreme" series provides an opportunity for the young reader. Using basic language and sentence structure the author introduces the many facets of the sport of snowboarding. The format of the book uses a short paragraph on the page with an accompanying photograph. While trying to avoid the mistake of using words early readers might not understand, the author still gets caught in the trap of using vocabulary difficult for some lower-spectrum early readers. However, this does not detract from the overall value of the book. There is a small glossary at the end of the book, but the words that are listed are not highlighted in the text. Photographs with words in balloons explain what is being discusses on the page. Most importantly, within middle and high school libraries, the struggling reader is sometimes forgotten as far as selection of reading material, leading them to read what might be an embarrassing or "baby" book. This series—while indicated for early readers—provides subjects that can allow older children with reading issues to become engaged. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 6 to 10.
