Snowboarding FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - John D. Orsborn
A sport created by surfers and skateboarders in the off-season has blown the lid off ski slopes and the snow sports world. While the first snowboard was invented back in the 1960s, it took a while for snowboarding to gain mainstream appeal. Now snow boarding is both a world cup and Olympic sport, with younger and younger participants making it a career. This title in the "X-Sports" series goes beyond the simple explanations of the sport and provides the early reader a thorough overview of this fun sport. While the author describes the history and equipment that make the sport, he takes a further step by writing about the individuals prominent within the sport. One cannot help but get caught up in the excitement of this book. Often within middle and high school libraries, the struggling reader is forgotten as far as reading material, leading them to read what might be an embarrassing or "baby" book. This bookwhile indicated for early readersprovides subjects that allow older children with reading issues to become engaged. Included in the book are a glossary, an index and a further reading section. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 6 to 10.
