Amphibians

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Nicole Peterson

Frogs, caecilians, and salamanders are all amphibians, which means they are cold blooded vertebrates with moist skin. Some jump, some look like worms, and all can outgrow their skin. Did you know that the male midwife toad carries frog eggs on his back legs until they hatch? This book is one of a series teaching children about creatures in the animal kingdom. The pictures are phenomenal, and a child who can't read the text can still learn about amphibians just by virtue of looking at the photographs. The book is organized with large, colorful pictures, about 30 words of text on the page (with a large font size), and important vocabulary words are in bold. The end of the book contains a glossary and an index. The entire book is part of the series "First Facts: Exploring the Animal Kingdom" and one of the back pages contains a table comparing the characteristics of creatures in the main animal groups. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 5 to 8.
