Extreme Downhill Skiing Moves (Behind the Moves Series)

FROM THE PUBLISHER

What do you do when the powder on the steep slope is swallowing up your skis? Learn about the moves needed to ski extreme mountain slopes, and the tricks to look cool doing it. Also read about craters, sluff, starfish, yardsales, and more extreme skiing slang.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Norah Piehl

To the uninitiated, all extreme skiing might seem the same. This easy-to-read book, though, outlines the differences between freeskiing (the very dangerous sport of skiing off course, above the tree line, and often off cliffs) and freestyle skiing (the Olympic event consisting of moguls and aerials). Skiing fans and extreme sports nuts will enjoy the action-packed color photographs that appear on almost every page, and the subject matter and straightforward text will draw in many reluctant readers. The book's organization, though, leaves something to be desired. For example, a paragraph on the history of skiing seems oddly placed and a glossary of skiing slang, much of which the text has already defined, abruptly interrupts the text. Parents and teachers will appreciate the safety warnings scattered throughout the text. A glossary, list of further readings, and addresses of skiing organizations are appended, as is a FactHound link to Internet sites. Part of the "Behind the Moves" series on extreme sports. 2004, Capstone Press, Ages 8 to 12.
