Very few people are familiar with the North Pole. Most children only know it as the home of Santa. This is a book to open their eyes. The author takes young readers on a visual and literary tour of the extreme north (and south) and not an elf is in sight. The text is easy to read and visually pleasing, encouraging for early readers. The information, while not comprehensive, is interesting. It has all the traditional reference necessities (index, glossary, etc.), but it adds a new twist: its own web page. A science teacher would be able to use it as a jumping off point for a lesson on biomes or as a link between reading and science. It is a fantastic resource on a little known place.
