War of 1812

The War of 1812 remains one of America's least understood wars. This book does a fine job of covering the high points of the conflict in text that is fairly simple to read. Each double-page spread includes a color illustration or map, increasing the interest level. The events leading up to the war are also clearly explained, helping to place it in the context of the period. Separate text boxes offer additional information on women in the war, the Fort McHenry flag, the U.S.S. Constitution, and the surrender of Red Eagle, a Creek Indian chief. The use of red or dark blue flag-type frames on many pages enhances the attractiveness of the book. The book also includes timeline of the period, as well as a list of interesting places to visit that are related to the War of 1812. Included is the address of a publisher sponsored Web page that connects to a list of up to date links. The book also includes a glossary, an index, and a list of other books for further reading. This book, one of the series "Let Freedom Ring," should be a good source of information for report writing, but also would be enjoyable reading for any student with an interest in United States history. 2003, Bridgestone Books, Ages 8 to 12.
