FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Leah Hanson
What country sports 16 international airports, can claim the oldest language in Europe, hosted the very first Olympic Games, and was once home to such famed thinkers as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle? The answer, of course, is Greece. This addition to the "Countries and Cultures" series is rich in facts and history of Greece. Detailing such areas as land, climate, history, government, economy, culture and the people, Greece is a thorough examination of the country. Photographs and fun facts work with the text to help readers visualize this distant country. Although it tends to read more like a textbook, this book provides valuable facts and figures for any student interested in this ancient country. Teachers may find the historical examination of Greece as a valuable study in how the original seat of democracy has struggled over time with truly allowing its people to rule. A recipe for Greek salad, a timeline and a glossary provide multiple points of entry in using this book as a learning tool. 2003, Bridgestone Books/Capstone Press, Ages 12 up.

Gr 3-6-This book has a fresh, well-designed format and large print, which makes it easy for students to extract information. Each of the five chapters has a leadoff full-page illustration with a "Fast Facts" insert. The text pays tribute to the great debt Western civilization owes to Greece, not always noted in recent books on this country. There are several "Did you know" boxes, sidebars about interesting sidelights, and a suggested Internet site run by the publisher with useful links to more information. Also included are three full-page, clearly labeled topographical, geopolitical, and natural resource maps. With many other series books on Greece available, this book's advantages include its accessible format; lively, up-to-date text; and excellent and abundant informative photos and captions, all of which convey a very good sense of the country and its people in limited space. Libraries needing more material on Greece in simplified form for reports should definitely consider it.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
