Mexico

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3--This extremely simple book covers some aspects of Mexican culture but offers no information on the country's history and almost nothing on geography. The contents page highlights a craft (a paper bag piñata), a map of Mexico, a game, and a recipe. The book includes a list of basic facts, a folktale, and a few paragraphs each on pets and on sites of interest. Each spread contains color photos. The text is clear and easy to understand, but the information is extremely limited.--Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist
Reviewed with Kay Melchisedech Olson's China.Gr. 2-3. These titles in the Many Cultures, One World series emphasize the culture of these diverse countries in a format suited to beginning readers. Both books introduce city and country life, family life, seasons, basic politics, typical pets, and famous sites. Mexico includes a traditional tale, "The Legend of the Poinsettia"; instructions for playing basta; directions for making cinnamon oranges and a paper bag pinata. China recounts the legend of "The Panda Bear's Black and White Fur" and explains how to use chopsticks and make birthday noodles and an egg-carton dragon. The books are generously illustrated with crisp, full-color photos; charts; maps; and inset articles. The succinct text is a good size for the intended audience, and chapters are short, making for a pleasing format. A glossary, a bibliography, embassy and tourism addresses, and a link to the publisher's list of related Web sites round out books that will be welcomed by interested young browsers as well as by primary classroom teachers looking for material on countries. FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Patricia Dole

This brief, simply-written overview gives the basic facts of population, agricultural crops, money, language, religion, principle cities, city and country life, seasons, Aztec history, family life, government, elementary and secondary education, favorite pets, resorts, sports, typical meals, arts and crafts, geographical areas, points of interest, and holidays such as Holy Week, Independence Day, the Day of the Dead, Cinco de Mayo, and the Blessing of the Animals. Adding interest to the text are the legend of the poinsettia, in which a poor girl's gift of a handful of weeds to the Baby Jesus miraculously becomes a bouquet of beautiful red flowers, the construction and use of the piata, a children's word game, and a recipe for cinnamon oranges. The large, handsome format is attractively illustrated with excellent color photographs of various shapes and sizes.
