Light FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Pick up this book in the "Our Physical World" series to get a first hand look at the basics of light. Simple principles are offered at an understandable level in only 24 pages. This book contains a variety of ideas pertaining to the topic including how light travels, bends, and how it is used. Students will also learn about Thomas Edison and his 1879 invention of the lightbulb. Four to five large print sentences per page make for a successful read for those in primary grades. Each text page faces a brilliant full-page photo dealing with light. Students will enjoy the variety of photos ranging from flashing lightning to magnification emphasizing refracted light. Pertinent vocabulary words are highlighted on the bottom of some pages and again in the glossary at the back of the book. Side bar boxes feature a "Fun Fact" or the encouragement to "Try This" in different parts of the book. An added plus is the "Hands On" activity at the end of the book. This is a sure winner for the classroom science curriculum. 2003, Bridgestone Books/Capstone Press,
