Children's Literature - John D. Orsborn
With the sub-title, "Champs of the Ramps," any aficionado of skateboarding knows the only possible cover picture can be of Tony Hawk. Angie Kaelberer begins her book, a volume of the "Skateboarding," series, with Hawk's historic 900 on the vert ramp. This is followed by biographical sketches of some of the earlier boarders such as Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, and Alan Gelfand (a member of the Bones Brigade). The author then follows up with skateboarding in the 1980s and today's stars of the scene. Sadly, there is only one page about the women who have made it in skateboarding. We can't necessarily chalk that up to bad coverage, however, because women have not grown in the sport. Another problem is that this book, which was published in 2002, only covers the biographies of the standard greats, not any of the up and comers blasting on to the scene in the last four years. Numerous photographs and clear and concise explanations make this a great book about skateboarding and a good book for the reluctant or beginning reader. A glossary and pages of sources for further reading along with a list of Internet sites complete this book. 2002, Capstone Press, Ages 5 to 10.
