Earthworms: Underground Burrowers - Book Reviews,
by Lola M. M. Schaefer
Earthworms: Underground Burrowers FROM THE CRITICS Children's Literature Straightforward and on a higher level than Kevin J. Holmes's Earthworms, also published by Bridgestone, this book from "The Wild World of Animals" series conveys information about the ubiquitous earthworm. Unfamiliar terminology is helpfully defined right below the four or five lines of text, and an arcing heading lets readers know the topic under discussion on each page. On the left, well-selected photographs show earthworm features, an egg-holding cocoon and a hatching worm. A red box per page adds a Fun Fact to the mix, making this business-like text appear more inviting. A mundane experiment in soil compaction, "Words to Know" that features pronunciation and definitions of seven words, other references and a short index are included. Patricia Lauber's Earthworms: Underground Farmers is difficult to locate but has a stronger and wider discussion of earthworms, but it is for a slightly older age group. 2001, Bridgestone Books, $18.60. Ages 7 to 11. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
