Dominican Republic - Book Reviews,
by Muriel L. Dubois
Dominican Republic FROM THE CRITICS Children's Literature Clear, bright and engaging full-page photographs accompany each one-page chapter in this country fact book for children. The book begins with basic fast facts, maps, a description of the flag and currency information and then leads into eight chapters covering the culture and natural history of the Dominican Republic. The chapter titles describe the content well and allow readers to easily locate information. Topics covered include the land, life on the island, food, sports, animals and holidays. The text is compact but provides a lot of information for students writing a report or interested in how the people live within their environment. The end of the book provides directions for a popular game, "Thumper," pronunciations for common Spanish words, a glossary, a reading list, addresses and Internet sites along with a small index. This book is recommended for libraries building their country collections, for its ease of reading and access. It is part of the "Countries of the World" series that includes books about many countries. 2001, Bridgestone Books/Capstone Press, $17.26. Ages 1 to 6. Reviewer: Melissa A. Caudill
