Children's Literature - Children's Literture
This attractive selection in "The Transportation Library" describes the history, major parts, and jobs of tow trucks, each in double-page spreads with six to ten short lines of text. Appealing to transportation fans and the school transportation curriculum, the book features clear, often-labeled color and black-and-white photographs which with the well-written text explain how several kinds of tow trucks work. A project explores how a pulley, a feature of most tow trucks, works to change the direction of the force and make lifting easier. Perhaps teachers will want to explore with older children how two pulleys might make work still easier. Back matter includes a glossary, a section of other nonfiction to read, an index, and three Internet sites. 2000, Bridgestone Books/Capstone Press, Ages 6 to 8, $17.26. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
