Supercross Racing - Book Reviews,
by Steve Hedrickson
Supercross Racing FROM THE CRITICS Children's Literature Supercross is the motorized version of BMX bicycle racing, which is the closest most youngsters will come to imitating any of the activities in this "Motorcycles" series. Motocross racers race motorcycles on outdoor courses with natural bumps, hills and other obstacles;supercross creates the bumps and hills on dirt courses inside huge arenas. Bicycle motocross (BMX) is the same thing, indoors or outdoors, with bicycles rather than motorized bikes. The book shows how an indoor dirt track is built and how huge tractor trailer trucks travel from race to race equipped with a full repair shop as well as space for motorcycles and living quarters for the racers. There are lots of details about disc brakes, suspension systems and engines as well as lists of prizes won by individual racers. There is also a chapter in each book about safety rules and equipment, including an acknowledgement that "performing stunts can be dangerous." Each title includes a glossary and an index along with lists of useful addresses, Internet sites and additional sources of information. The series would be a useful addition to a classroom library where it might attract the attention of reluctant readers and otherwise distracted or disinterested youngsters. 2000, Capstone Press, $21.26. Ages 8 to 14. Reviewer:Karen Leggett
