Hillclimbing FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature
Hillclimbing features uphill racing on specially designed motorcycles. While hillclimbing motorcycles are similar to the more sedate street motorcycles, they are about three feet longer and include special features designed for uphill racing. Hillclimbing dates to 1910, when motorcycle manufacturers began testing their bikes' strength by racing them up hills. The book also features information about superbike equipment, races and the skills employed by drivers. The illustrations are a true strength, with many color photographs depicting a variety of bikes and racing scenes. Although smartly done, this book and its series companions focus on a very narrow market¾those young readers who are motorcycle enthusiasts. The book is part of the "Motorcycles" series, which highlights ten types of motorized cycles, such as dirt bikes, streetbikes and the classic Harley-Davidson motorcycles. 2000, Capstone Press, $21.26. Gr 3-6-These books about different types of motorcycles are presented in a straightforward, informative style. They provide an introduction to specific types of racing, basic history, equipment, skills, and safety. What is not included is the price of equipment or diagrams of the specific kind of motorcycle that each title highlights. A large, full-color photo appears opposite almost every page of text. Individual titles from this series may be of interest to young people, but most libraries will not need all 10 books. Enthusiasts may prefer Michael Dregni's Motorcycle Racing (Capstone, 1994).-Diane Olivo-Posner, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
