FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Kenneth J McCabe, BS, BA, MD (University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)Description: This is a basic introduction to pediatric radiology covering common pediatric presentations, diagnosis, and radiographic correlation. Purpose: The purpose is to introduce the beginning radiology resident, pediatrics resident, or medical student to commonly diagnosed pediatric conditions. An introductory book should guide the reader through basic steps and these objectives are met in this text. Concise, practical introductory pediatric texts are uncommon, so this book fills a void in the pediatric radiology bookshelf. Audience: The author states in the preface that the audience is the radiology resident or medical student. This book would be beneficial for beginning pediatrics residents as well. It is well thought out and written and includes references for further reading for more obscure differential diagnoses and pediatric syndromes. Features: This book covers the basic components of any pediatric radiology practice and the typical studies encountered daily, broken into anatomic sections. Approximately one-third of the book is devoted to the cardiopulmonary system including the upper respiratory tract. This is a very important part of the book since a majority of emergency room visits and newborn complications arise from the cardiopulmonary system. Each of the sections is well planned and constructed to cover the most important radiographic findings and differential diagnoses. The illustrations and figures are very helpful and augment the text well. A majority of these are of very good quality, especially for a paperback book. The tables are well placed and are primarily used for quick references of differential diagnoses typically segmented by age. A recap of these tables at the end of the chapter or in a glossary would have been an excellent addition for quick review. Assessment: The author provides an excellent approach for residents and students being introduced to pediatric radiology. The book is meant to orient the reader to the special considerations for this population of patients as well as the most common pediatric disease processes. The author provides references for further reading for the more obscure, but boards important, pediatric syndromes, and differential diagnoses.
