Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD (University of California San Francisco)Description: This is the 20th edition of a comprehensive and authoritative book covering the use of clinical laboratory tests in diagnosing, treating, and managing care of patients. The previous edition was published in 1996. Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a comprehensive resource for all scientific information regarding laboratory medicine and clinical pathology as they relate to patient care. This edition, in keeping with the excellence of past editions, has achieved its worthy goal. Audience: This book would appeal to individuals at many different levels of training. It would be appropriate for medical technology students, medical students, pathology and laboratory medicine residents and attendings, practicing pathologists and laboratorians, and anyone else interested in the integral role of the clinical laboratories in patient care. The editors and authors are recogized internationally for their expertise. Features: The book, in keeping with previous editions, is a truly comprehensive text of laboratory medicine. In 68 chapters and 1512 pages, it covers anything you might ever want to know about clinical laboratory testing and its relationship to patient care. This edition maintains the excellence of previous editions, with extensive and authoritative yet concise information regarding test methodology, pitfalls and interferences, test interpretation, and relevance of test results to patient care. An entirely new feature of this edition (11 chapters, no less) is a section devoted to the newly emerging field of molecular pathology, covering basic principles to methodologies to regulatory issues governing this type of testing. This edition, as with previous editions, contains wonderful color photomicrographs of microscopic findings common in a clinical laboratory, spanning peripheral blood, urine sediment analysis, and microorganisms detected in various body fluids or tissues. Assessment: As with previous editions, this book will continue to be a mainstay of any laboratory medicine library. It has been, and will continue to be, regarded as the "bible" of laboratory medicine. It's an incredible bargain at $99. Get it!
