Reviewer: LouAnn Schraffenberger, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P (Univ of Illinois at Chicago School of Biomed & Health Info Mgmt)Description: This book is a comprehensive listing of medical words, organized by medical specialties, primarily for medical transcriptionists and others writing or transcribing medical reports. Purpose: The purpose, according to the author, is to introduce the newcomer and the seasoned medical transcriptionist to the available information and to provide the essentials necessary to make the task of transcribing medical reports an easier job. The book is designed for medical transcriptionists by medical transcriptionists who understand the requirements of the vocation.Audience: The primary audience is medical transcriptionists. The original author, Sheila Sloane, was one of the pioneers in creating medical transcription reference books. Ellen Drake, who was selected by Ms. Sloane to finish this edition, has also written the Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book. Both individuals are recognized authorities for medical transcription reference books.Features: The book contains three major parts. The first part contains general medical terms, general surgical terms, and laboratory, pathology and chemistry terms. The next section is the most valuable and the major portion of the book: a listing of terms within about 20 medical specialties. The third part contains abbreviations, anatomy illustrations, rules for forming plurals and combining forms in medical terminology. Two appendixes include a table of elements and a table of weights and measures.Assessment: This is an essentialreference for every medical transcription department and for the independent medical transcriptionist at home. The expanded phonetic spelling aid to locate difficult to spell terms is an important addition. Also helpful are the 200+ non-medical terms frequently used in medical reports and the 90+ most frequently misspelled English words. Not only does the medical transcriptionist have to be a medical language expert but possess a strong command of grammar and spelling. This book should help do all of the above.
