Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease
- Book Review,
by Ramzi S. Cotran

From Book News, Inc.
It's been five years since the previous edition of Pathologic Basis of Disease; authors Stanley Robbins and Ramzi Cotran have both passed on, and their names have been added to the head of the title. Three authors have undertaken the update: Vinay Kumar (U. of Chicago), Abul K. Abbas (U. of California, San Francisco), and Nelson Fausto (U. of Washington). Previous editions have been appreciated for their timeliness and incorporation of new developments, so it's surely only with careful thought that the material has been restrained to one volume. The goals of the reference remain the same--primarily to provide a clear reference for use by students throughout their four years of medical school, with enough depth and detail for more advanced readers as well. The first 10 chapters on general pathology are followed by 19 chapters on diseases of the organ systems. An online version, available to those who purchase the print version, affords the many advantages of that medium; the included CD-ROM contains interactive case studies.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

FROM THE CRITICS

Ivan Damjanov

This is the sixth edition of the leading pathology textbook used in most U.S. medical schools and many other parts of the world. This book is updated with many rewritten chapters and additional color illustrations. A new artist was hired to provide multicolor illustrations. This book remains the leading textbook of pathology for medical students. It is both a textbook and a reference aimed at students of pathology. All the major topics of general and systemic pathology are covered. The material is presented in a standard manner enabling the students to easily learn the basic aspects of human diseases. The text is well illustrated by high quality color photographs well thought through diagrams. At the end of each chapter there are well chosen references. This book remains the leading textbook of pathology for medical students in the U.S. All the attractive features of previous editions have been retained, and even though it is now multi-authored it still reads well, and has the master imprint of the chief editor. The material is presented very attractively and it should appeal to medical students and their teachers alike. Few medical students will be able to read it cover to cover, but many of them will buy it and save for future reference.
