FROM THE CRITICS
R. James Valentine
This book focuses on procedures that are commonly performed by vascular surgeons. It is intended as a supplement to an earlier atlas describing arterial anatomy and methods of surgical exposure. The authors' stated purpose is to give a complete discussion on commonly performed vascular operations. Each chapter is focused on a specific procedure. In addition to a detailed technical discourse, the authors present information on clinical diagnosis and perioperative patient care relevant to each operation. The discussion is presented at the level of a senior trainee and assumes that the reader already has a basic knowledge of vascular surgery. This book is intended for the senior resident or surgeon in early practice. It is also an excellent review source for the surgeon who performs vascular surgery on an occasional basis. The information is highly credible, as both authors are highly regarded vascular surgeons and are recognized authorities in the field. Illustrations are the central feature of this atlas. They are consistent and uniformly excellent, emphasizing clean dissection and wide exposure. The text provides a commentary for the illustrations and additional useful information about the specific procedures. There are no references. The book is sturdy and is sufficiently compact to be kept near the operating room for quick review. This is an excellent atlas that is certain to become a classic. Although the reader will not agree with all the techniques as illustrated, the authors provide a balanced and unbiased discussion of the options. This book is highly recommended for senior trainees and for young surgeons who are gaining experience in practice.
