FROM THE CRITICS

Horacio Gutierrez

This book represents a well-organized and current approach to vascular sonography. This long awaited fourth edition includes updated techniques and numerous improved images since the third edition was published in 1992 The author's goal of providing an up-to-date approach to vascular sonography while emphasizing its evolving clinical role is well met by the contributors. The book has a wide target audience, including practicing radiologists, vascular surgeons, residents, and sonographers. Basic technical aspects of sonography as it applies to vascular imaging are introduced, including recent technical advances in the field. The book is subdivided into the major areas of vascular imaging, including cerebrovascular imaging, arterial and venous extremity imaging, and evaluation of abdominal and penile vasculature. The book is well written and well organized. Numerous high quality images and illustrations, including images that depict useful scanning techniques, are presented. A few notable shortcomings include limited or no discussion of imaging of female pelvic vasculature, liver transplant vasculature, tumor vascularity, and three-dimensional ultrasound. Despite these shortcomings, the goal of accurately presenting the major areas where sonography has contributed to the management of vascular disease is well met. This book is an outstanding introduction to vascular sonography and this edition is a welcome update to prior editions. I highly recommend it to practicing radiologists, vascular surgeons, residents, and sonographers with an interest in vascular imaging.
