Sinn Fein Rebellion as They Saw It

FROM THE PUBLISHER

This eyewitness account of the Rising, based on letters which Mrs Norway wrote at the time, is by the wife of the Secretary of the General Post Office and mother of Nevil Shute the novelist. She spent Easter 1916 living in the Royal Hibernian Hotel, Dawson Street, while Nevil Shute served as an ambulance orderly.

FROM THE CRITICS

Booknews

Mary Louisa Hamilton Norway watched the 1916 Easter Rising from a hotel in Dawson Street and published her family letters about it the same year. Her husband Arthur worked at the post office the insurgents used as their headquarters, and wrote an account of his own experience. Their narratives include their teenage son, who grew up to be novelist Nevil Shute. Jeffery (modern history, U. of Ulster- Jordanstown) presents the two documents and frames a historical context. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
