Battle for the Ukraine: The Korsun'-Shevchenkovskii Operation FROM THE PUBLISHER
This volume is an unexpurgated translation of the Soviet General Staff Study No. 14, which was published under the rubric of 'War Experiences' and originally classified 'Secret'. Prepared to educate Soviet commanders and staff officers, it is the most scholarly and detailed examination of the operation that has appeared to date. While many other books have covered the operation, none has done so as thoroughly from the Soviet perspective. In addition, the book contains excerpts from other Soviet studies of the operation and a map supplement of daily operational maps, which are vital to following the detailed action and permit the reader to understand the general flow of the operation. Given the intent of the study, readers have been provided enough detail to study the operation in addition to reading it for 'pleasure'.
SYNOPSIS
For six months, the Soviet army had pushed the Germans westward to clear the way for a deep thrust into the Ukraine, then struck again to recapture the town of Korsun'-Shevchenkovskii in February 1944. Glantz, a specialist on the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War, and Orenstein, a specialist in Central and East European political and military affairs, translate the account of the battle from the large Red Army General Staff study on wartime operations, and add material from other sources.
