The Customs and Traditions of Wales (Pocket Guide series)
- Book Review,
by Trefor M. Owen

Welsh Historian
". . . extremely neat and pleasing in presentation . . . Altogether the guide is immensely accessible and user- friendly for both expert and layman. It is a pocket version in the best sense - comprehensive yet succinct."

Rural Wales
". . . Trefor M. Owen has admirably succeeded in introducing his reader to a wealth of information on the social history, customs and traditions of Wales."

Lore and Language
"This guide is certainly pocket-sized, but the depth and breadth of its contents are quite remarkable, and equal to what is often found in a much bulkier tome."

Book Description
Following on from the success of The History of Wales this new Pocket Guide is primarily intended for the general reader who wants to know more about the traditional customs of Wales. An introductory chapter discusses the historical setting of the customs, the social forces which influenced their development and their study by antiquarians and historians from the eighteenth century on. The customs themselves are discussed in terms of those traditions centred on the hearth, farming, community life and the parish church, with a final chapter reviewing the changes brought about by nonconformity and industrialization.
