James Ensor: The Creative Years
- Book Review,
by Diane Lesko

From Library Journal
Ensor, born in 1860 of British father and Belgian mother, lived his long life in the seaside Belgian town of Ostend. He painted Academy-correct and luminous interiors, portraits, and still lifes, and then his most famous workscenes of brilliantly colored masks and skeletons, lively and clothed, in various human dramas. Although this book's chief focus is 1877 to 1899, Lesko gives a detailed, lively, and credible account of Ensor's entire life and the familial, artistic, and literary influences on it. There are many plates, but unfortunately only eight in color, somewhat scanty for a book in this price range. Recommended for art libraries; for other libraries, Jacques Janssens's Ensor (Crown, 1978) provides excellent visual reference. Hara L. Seltzer, NYPLCopyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
