A Bob the Builder Ready-to-Read Boxed Set FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Another TV series hits the publishing marketplace. It could be worseat least these six little pamphlet-books promote literacy. This particular collection uses Level 1 reading skills: sentences are lengthened from the Pre-Level 1 booklets, and rebus icons are occasionally used (although one questions the adoption of rebuses for proper names, e.g., "Pilchard," instead of "cat.") Which brings one to content. Bob the Builder, his occasional helper, Wendy, and their collection of anthropomorphized construction equipment may be loveable as animated puppets, but they fall a little flat on the page. The stories are equally flat. Dick, Jane, Sally, and Spot are looking better all the time. The collection does come in a tidy box complete with Velcro snaps and a toting handle. 2004, Simon Spotlight/Simon & Schuster, Ages 3 to 6.
