Just because college costs are escalating, doesn't mean higher education is prohibitive. At least not once you investigate Cash for College: The Ultimate Guide for Scholarships. The authors plainly and clearly spell out the procedures for finding and applying for college scholarships. The book contains the "At-a-Glance Scholarship Index," which allows users to search for scholarships by a range of topics, as well as sample resumes, letters of recommendation and other important documents.

From Library Journal
Blum, a professional fund raiser with more than 20 books on the subject of free money to her credit, here lists more than 1000 grants and scholarships for undergraduate education in the United StatesAnone of which requires an application fee. Each entry includes the funding agency name, address, telephone number, contact person (if applicable), number of awards, amount of money awarded, restrictions, and deadline for application. The entries are arranged in four categories: geographic location, subject field, special groups, and miscellaneous sources. First published in 1990, this book will be revised every two years. It is not as user-friendly as the author claimsAthere is no index, and the table of contents is too general. Still, secondary school students, their parents, and guidance counselors will find it useful. The McKees, founders of College Resource Materials who published the first edition of this book in hardcover in 1994, include the same information as Blum: address, telephone number, a brief description of the type of aid offered, and deadline. However, they also include the web site of each organization, if known. Their coverage is broader than Blum'sAthey include over 4000 entries representing $5,445,500Aand their advice is generally helpful. One weakness is the book's lack of a subject listing. Seven of the appendixes may be copied for personal use; the eighth is a sample high school r?sum?. Both books are valuable and complementary reference sources.ASamuel T. Huang, Northern Illinois Univ. Libs., DeKalb Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
This book is in two parts. Part 1 covers such basics as how to plan a successful funding search; request, organize, and track applications; request letters of recommendation; and write a persuasive essay. A glossary of terms, an impressive list of additional sources of financial-aid sources, and a list of addresses and telephone numbers for each state's financial-aid program round out this section.Part 2, the largest part of the book, begins with an "At-a-Glance Scholarship Index." It is actually a series of indexes allowing the user to search by such fields as area of study; contests; disabilities; religious affiliation; dependents of veterans; participation/membership in clubs, companies, organizations, professions, or unions; residence in a particular place; foreign study; and exchange programs. Each listing refers to a source's entry number, not a page number. The scholarship directory is divided into sections for private sources and for colleges. Each entry includes address, telephone number, brief description of the type of aid offered, and deadline. An index of scholarship names is followed by eight appendixes, seven of which may be copied by the reader (e.g., a timetable, request tracking forms, and a sample letter of recommendation). The eighth appendix is a sample high-school r{‚}esum{‚}e.The McKees write directly to the reader, sometimes the students, sometimes the parent(s). While their advice is usually sound, it occasionally seems patronizing. For example, when discussing filling out applications, they suggest asking a friend to do the typing if the applicant doesn't know how or asking to use a typewriter at school if the applicant doesn't own one.Cash for College should be a welcome addition to college-information collections in public and school libraries. High school librarians should consider purchasing additional copies for circulation to the counseling office, parents, and students.

Book Description
Would you like to attend college almost for free? Then you're in luck. It can be done. Millions of dollars are available from private and federal programs -- and not all are reserved for the class valedictorian! Many are awarded based on a student's special interests, projected major, and other criteria. With college costs rising by 6 to 15 percent or more annually, no one can afford to be without the guidance offered in this book.Cynthia and Phillip McKee have created the sourcebook on finding scholarship money -- now fully revised and updated to include more than 6,000 entries representing over $8.5 billion in scholarships and grants! But this book is more than just a compendium of scholarships. It is also a step-by-step road map through the entire financial application process. The McKees explain how to create a sparkling resume, write persuasive essays, obtain recommendation letters, negotiate the financial-aid maze, avoid common pitfalls, and learn the useful shortcuts that can pave the way for success. Sample letters, schedules, and charts show you how to prepare your strongest application and stay on top of deadlines. A comprehensive index helps you find all the scholarship opportunities for which you may be eligible. "If you have only one shot, make it your best one!" say the McKees. This book will help you take your best shot at attending the college of your dreams.

About the Author
After locating more than $340,000 in college scholarship money for their son (who has now completed graduate school and garnered a total of more than $500,000 in scholarships), Cynthia and Phillip McKee were flooded with requests for help from parents and students. So in 1989 they founded College Resource Materials, a family-owned and -operated company. Through their popular workshops, the McKees have helped thousands of students of all ages find the financial resources for college. Cynthia McKee has appeared on National Public Radio and many other radio and television shows. She has won numerous awards for her community and business achievements: she is a member of the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame in the area of Business and Finance, received a Certificate of Appreciation from President and Mrs. Bush in 1991 for her community involvement, and was selected as one of ten National Hispanic Leaders by the national Telemundo Network and UltraTide. College Resource Materials is based in San Antonio, Texas.
