Award winning photographer Tana Hoban has put together a collection of practical signs children will see on the road and in public places to help them learn, understand and recognize basic images without words. Common traffic signs and other emblems alerting people to upcoming traffic signals, detours, deer crossings, restrooms, first aid, school zones, no smoking and railroad crossings are presented. There are a total of 27 photographs in the book with a symbol on each page. The large photographs allow readers to see each sign up close-something that's not easily done driving by-and gives them time to study the colors, shape and design of the symbols even if they don't read or speak English. There is a glossary at the back of the book that tells readers what each sign means. The format of the book, which doesn't have any text, also gives adults the chance to talk with their children about these signs, what they mean, how they are used and their importance-as well as encouraging independence and common sense.
