Bruce Pasternack and Albert Viscio, founding partners of Booz-Allen & Hamilton's Strategic Leadership Practice, have taken a comprehensive study on current business behavior that was conducted by their consulting firm and have used it to develop an intriguing new structure for companies of the future. In The Centerless Corporation: Transforming Your Organization for Growth and Prosperity in the New Millennium, they argue that decreasing bureaucracy and increasing communication in an environment where education and idea-sharing are actively promoted will prove a successful alternative to the top-down style of central management still favored by many businesses today.

From Library Journal
Pasternack and Viscio, founding partners of Booz-Allen & Hamilton's Strategic Leadership Practice, have produced a well-researched, convincing guide to a new corporate structure model, based on three principles: personnel, knowledge management, and coherence. Replete with numerous case studies and real-life examples from their extensive work with corporations such as GE, Motorola, and Norwest, the book details how corporations are redefining the roles of the CEO, central staff, and corporate headquarters. This new centerless corporation model supports five key functions?strategic leadership, corporate identity, capabilities distribution and access, low-cost capital access, and enterprisewide control. The book's strength is the authors' transformation of this new model into a set of steps that any corporation can follow. Selected references are included. Recommended for corporate, academic, and large public libraries.?Michael R. Leach, Physics Research Lib., Harvard Univ., Cambridge, Mass.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Book Description
In today's fast-paced global business environment, the conventional model of the corporation and its management principles no longer deliver results. Economic upheaval, changing demographics, and technological revolution have forever altered the requirements for running a business today. Now, in response, The Centerless Corporation presents a radical new corporate model -- designed for your organization's survival, growth, and prosperity. Drawing on groundbreaking research they conducted at Booz • Allen & Hamilton, Bruce A. Pasternack and Albert J. Viscio offer a comprehensive strategy for managing in turbulent times. To deal with increasing complexity, they contend, leaders must abandon their command-and-control mentality and establish a model in which responsibility and accountability are distributed throughout the organization, employees are regarded as valued resources, and knowledge flows freely. Illustrating their ideas with invaluable real-life examples, Pasternack and Viscio explain how to attract and develop leaders, build coherence to unite all parts of an organization, and restructure business units and corporate roles to add value rather than overhead.

The Centerless Corporation: A New Model For Transforming Your Organization For Growth And Prosperity

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Bruce A. Pasternack and Albert J. Viscio, the founding partners of the Strategic Leadership Practice at Booz-Allen & Hamilton, one of the world's top management and technology consulting firms, offer a comprehensive strategy for business survival and success. At the heart of this work is a new model for the 21st-century corporation that will bring growth and prosperity. The Centerless Corporation goes beyond the lines and boxes of today's rigid organizations. It defines new relationships which make traditional corporate center, command-and-control models obsolete. The Centerless Corporation is a compelling model that presents practical solutions for how to build a more effective global organization, develop capabilities for growth, formulate a New People Partnership with employees, implement a learning organization, and cultivate leaders at every level in the organization. The foundation of many of this book's concepts was developed by a Booz-Allen & Hamilton task force charged with studying emerging trends and alternatives for large corporations to cope with the new business environment. The authors convincingly demonstrate that successful firms will build leadership models based on vision, values, and identity. They will establish coherent business processes within their organizations, leverage knowledge, share best practices, and develop highly motivated work forces. They will redefine their organizations, establishing new roles for what the authors characterize as the Global Core, a value-contributing, next-generation corporate center.

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

Scott Bryce offers a straightforward reading of this overview of ideas that a corporation should consider to improve its structure (LJ 2/15/98). The authors advocate a small, core management team at the top with more power distributed to corporate divisions. There may be a problem in saying that corporate leadership should be downsized while providing more direction for the business. The authors focus on knowledge, people, and coherence as key concerns. Unfortunately, they fail to go beyond brief generalities and get to meaningful specifics. Some of their points are obvious, such as that people are an important component of successful organizations. Since few persons have an opportunity to restructure a corporation, these tapes may not have a large audience. The ideas here have been presented more effectively before.
