FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Anna K Roetting, DVM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)Description: Two editors, 16 consulting editors, and 167 contributors produced this book covering topics of equine medicine and related disciplines in an alphabetically organized reference with two individually organized tables of content and one alphabetical index. Purpose: This book aims to provide a resource to answer specific questions and a overview of more generalized topics. To my knowledge, a similarly organized book does not currently exist in the field of equine medicine and this should be very helpful. The clear structure of the book should make a quick and easy access to the contents possible. Audience: The target audience is the equine practitioner with little time to attend meetings or follow current literature. In my opinion it will be an excellent source of quick information for this group as well as for veterinary students and veterinarians in specialties other than equine medicine. The editors and contributors are all experts in their respective fields. Features: Topics covered belong to the fields of equine medicine, behavior, cardiology, dermatology, theriogenology, and toxicology and include laboratory tests. The information should cover most of the questions arising for the equine practitioner in those areas. The contributions for each topic are clearly structured in one of four similar formats. This not only allows fast access to information for the first time user, but should allow for even quicker information retrieval with repeated reading. The editors point out that the area of equine lameness has not been covered in detail, and state that some topics in dermatology and cardiology have been overlooked. The editors do not claim to cover the area of equine surgery, and indeed information given from this field seems to be underrepresented and short. The title of the book does not make these omissions clear. Assessment: This book provides very high quality information presented in a comprehensive and readily accessible way. It should be a valuable addition to the equine literature due to its unique design and prove to be very useful to the target audience.
