Reviewer: Anatoly Bezkorovainy, JD, PhD (Rush Medical College of Rush University)Description: This is a "review of a review" book designed to provide a last-minute visit with the field of biochemistry before sitting for a licensure examination. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick (two-hour) review of the field of biochemistry. The short preface provides an excellent definition of the purpose, particularly noting ". . . you cannot review what you never knew." Every medical student would do well to heed this pearl of wisdom. Audience: The audience targeted is medical and other health professions students who might want a last-minute review of the field of biochemistry before taking their licensure examinations. Features: One negative is the lack of an index, which might be quite useful for a quick reference to a topic so the reader would not have to leaf through the pages (after all, the book is supposed to provide a quick review of biochemistry). Some glaring omissions include the lack of material on hemoglobin chemistry or physiology, and few, if any, metabolic control mechanisms. On a positive note, each section has a "clinical relevance story" (e.g., metabolic changes in diabetes mellitus). Acid-base chemistry is well handled, as are topics in molecular biology. Assessment: The biomedical sciences have finally caught up with the legal profession in the review book publishing area. I remember taking a bar review course after finishing law school; we were handed a two-volume set of tomes reviewing the three-year legal curriculum, plus a small book reviewing the review books. This was a good way to prepare for the bar exam, and I think that this book serves that same purpose rather well. I only hope that our future doctors will be reviewing that which they have learned in the first place. I know that the lawyers certainly do.
