Basic Biomechanics of the Musculoskeletal System

FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Todd D. Royer, PhD (University of Delaware)Description: This book addresses three general topics in biomechanics: musculoskeletal tissue biomechanics; biomechanics of joints; and applied biomechanics. The latter is a new component of this third edition, highly anticipated since the release of the second edition in 1989. Purpose: According to the editors, the purpose is to acquaint readers with the force-motion relationship in the musculoskeletal system. The editors accomplish this worthy goal by first building a foundation of principles of tissue biomechanics and then proceeding to integrate these tissue mechanics in a joint-by-joint analysis. The book explores joint structure and function under normal, injurious, and degraded conditions. Audience: The book targets graduate and upper level undergraduate students of human biomechanics in addition to physicians, clinicians, and trainers. An engineering background is not required to understand its content. Features: Chapters featuring the biomechanics of bone, cartilage, tendon, ligaments, nerves, and muscle include many photomicrographs to illustrate mechanical principles of each tissue. Figures reproduced from the cited literature clearly demonstrate typical and abnormal loading and their repercussions. A nice addition to this third edition are the flowcharts at the end of the chapters illustrating the interrelationship between tissue structure, function, and precursors to injury. Chapters covering the biomechanics of joints are updated from the second edition and include numerous figures, graphics, and basic mathematical calculations. Finally, the newly added chapters in applied biomechanics address fracture fixation, arthroplasty, and gait analysis to fully complement the preceding topic areas. Assessment: If you liked the second edition of this book, you'll appreciate the revisions and additions to the third edition. The book's strength lies in its candid approach to analyzing tissue and joint biomechanics and is a welcome reference for kinesiology professionals.
