         Editorial Review

Armed America: The Status of Gun Control
- Book Review,
by Elaine Landau

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-- A useful and informative guide to the history of firearms as an emotional symbol of survival and freedom in this country; a discussion of increased private ownership of arms; and arguments, pro and con, for gun control. Landau includes an explanation of the Brady Bill, the McCallum Amendment, and current attempts to regulate the sale of assault rifles. Also cited are recent cases that have attracted national attention--the Bernhard Goetz incident and the tragedy at the Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, California. The author has done a commendable job of presenting opposing views, and points out the dilemma of many citizens who intellectually favor gun control but who want the security of a gun to protect themselves and their families in especially violent urban areas. An interesting complement to this title is Gun Control (Gloucester, 1988) by Nigel Hawkes, which is more sensational in its approach and emphasizes European views. Gun Control: A Decision for Americans (Watts, 1982) by Edward F. Dolan, Jr. presents a well - balanced discussion, and shows that the U. S. is no closer to solving this problem than it was in 1982.- Cynthia M. Sturgis, Ledding Library, Milwaukie, Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
