FROM THE CRITICS
Library Journal
Kids First! is an undertaking of The Coalition for Quality Children's Media that uses a volunteer corps of children and adults to evaluate videos and CD-ROMs. Its collaboration with the New York Times has resulted in this practical handbook. Opening with a quartet of essays by New York Times writers and closing with a listing of some 500 family films of interest to teenagers, the book is packed with compact reviews of videos and CD-ROMs. Organized by audience age group and subject category, the entries include a summary, price listing, producer names, most appropriate audience age, and comments from adults and children. Reviews of videos for infants to age four through adult (parenting), as well as suggested feature films for teenagers, are augmented by appendixes listing titles by special interest (e.g., problems, multicultural/diversity) and providing the address, phone numbers, and sometimes URLs of video producers. Since some videos will interest more than one age group, a system of cross references is in place (although each title is reviewed only in the section for the youngest appropriate audience). A useful tool for parents and public librarians alike.--Carolyn M. Mulac, Chicago P.L. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
